Description

Elaine Samuels with Gavin or Sim Jones (electric violin), Annie Parker (flute, saxophone, whistle), Mike Hislop or Joey Burke (bass guitar) and Alan Barwise (drums) play as the completely live, electrifying live band, “Kindred Spirit”; featuring beautiful vocals, powerful songs and guitar playing, incredible, scorching electric violin woven with extraordinary flute and sax playing.

Kindred Spirit, the band, (they also perform in duo and trio line-ups) are renowned for their powerful, original, contemporary folk / rock numbers, often mystical in nature; like “Green Man” and “Morrigan” as well as stunning takes on some classic tracks including Eagles, Kinks, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Corrs and Fleetwood Mac numbers. They will take your breath away with an incredible version of Bob Dylan’s, “All Along The Watchtower”. The stunning nature of the treatment of these tracks is due to the “hauntingly beautiful and deeply emotional” voice of Elaine enhanced by the extraordinary flute playing of Annie Parker in combination with the phenomenal electric violin playing of Sim and Gavin Jones.

Singer / songwriter / guitarist, Elaine Samuels began singing in folk clubs at the age of just 14 and is known on the folk / acoustic circuit as a powerful solo performer, having performed at folk clubs and festivals the length of the country and having been featured on radio and television a number of times. At a concert, Elaine will perform mostly her own songs and favourite covers. In a pub type setting Elaine will largely play well known covers and encourage the audience to sing along. Elaine, though still performing solo, began evolving Kindred Spirit back in the ‘90s and, as a duo with first violin player Jane Eldridge, Kindred Spirit were booked at Glastonbury and Guildford Folk and Blues festivals, to name a few. The current five-piece band line-up first began performing after the dawn of the new millennium and are fast building up an enthusiastic following.

Annie Parker trained classically to a very high level on the flute, which she also teaches. Like Sim, she puts her instruments through effects pedals creating some very interesting sound-scapes and her sheer technical ability and dexterity, combined with a talent for improvisation produces thrilling instrumental solos.

Gavin Jones started playing the violin at the age of 4 and has had a top grade classical music training, including private lessons at the Yehudi Menhuin School. Gavin has played in several different orchestras and toured Europe but the highlight of his career, to date, was playing with the Surrey County Youth Orchestra at the final night of the School Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, leading the orchestra and playing a small solo in Vaughan William's Symphony No. 5. He has also become a brilliant improviser, having played jazz and blues violin acoustically for a number of years.

Hearing Sim Jones (at a duo gig with Elaine) in 2005 by Ian Gillan – of “Deep Purple” – Ian was so gob-smacked by Sim’s playing that he immediately recorded some of Sim’s electric violin solos for his DVD project, “Gillan’s Inn”, released April 2006. In March 2006, Ian invited Sim to perform with him and friends at the Albert Hall for the Tommy Vance, Teenage Cancer Trust night. Ian Gillan said of Sim,


“I've been in this business for forty years and I've heard everything but tonight I've heard something completely new."

Another very special feature of the Kindred Spirit band is the musical interplay between lead instrumentalists Sim or Gavin and Annie. Not only do they produce beautiful solos and foot stomping jigs and reels but they are both superb at on the spot improvisations and fly into thrilling musical duels live on stage.
