    PRESS RELEASE

6 times Olympian Mary King Raises Funds for Air Ambulance

Mary King, 6 times British Olympian, visited Upton Junior School on Friday afternoon, to meet the children and show them her Silver medal from this year’s London Games. She followed this in the evening with a talk, open to the general public, to raise funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Service.

Mary King, 51, said she was “delighted to speak to the whole school assembly” and thought the children “wonderful and asked some really intelligent and interesting questions”.

Andy Gould, headmaster, who was a Games Maker for the London Olympics in Weymouth for the sailing, said that he was delighted and so grateful that Mary could spend so much of her valuable time to visit the school and inspire the children.

The evening talk was wonderfully attended with people from as far afield as Chester and Surrey, with the demand on Mary’s autobiography being so great that the books ran out before the end of the evening.

A day with Mary, accompanying her to an event, was auctioned after the talk and raised a further £500 which bolstered the evenings takings.

Organiser, Simon Thomson, 54, commented that the whole day went really well, with so many children and adults glued to every word Mary spoke. “It was all so wonderful”, he added.

Supporting the evening event was Ascot Timber Buildings, one of Mary’s Sponsors, who attended with their display.

The raffle raised £153, the auction raised £500 and ticket sales raised £743 making a total of £1,416 with the profits going to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Service. A huge Thank You to everyone who helped make the evening a success.
